I have been busy

I have been a busy girl this past week. I have been searching for my Great Grandma Christina Sauer's marriage to my Great Grandpa Matelon Pember. I know they had to have married sometime after Jan. 30, 1906 and by Aug. 30, 1907. She died on Aug. 30, 1907 after giving birth to my Grandpa Arnold M. Pember on Aug. 30, 1907 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA. She had previously married Walter E. Rose in Jackson, Jackson, Michigan, USA on Jan. 30, 1906.

I have searched Indiana Marriages and Ohio Marriages using Christina Sauer and Christina Rose and M. Pember, Matelon Pember with no luck. The Michigan Marriage counties I have searched so far are Jackson, Wayne, Oakland, Hillsdale, Ingham, and Washtenaw. I'm kind of at a lose for now until more records are released as to where to look. I'm almost considering looking in Canada. Her Death Certificate has her as Christina Pember, married, Father Wm Sauer, mother unknown.

I haven't found a birth certificate yet for my Grandpa Pember. I believe my mom told me his Dad stole him from the hospital and changed his name from Joseph to Arnold.

I also have been working on linking up more of my images to my Legacy Family Tree Program. I really need to get myself organizing a bit better. I'm getting there slow but steady.

I have to erase my My Passport hard drive again because I oopsed and let windows backup there again. This time I think I will just copy everything I want on My Passport hard drive individually and then only plug it in when I have added new things that I want to save on it.

So far I have only used Dropbox to save my blogs and blog templates. I haven't decided what else I want to send there. I'll do more probably after I get my organizing done. I have way to much in photos, documents, and my data from Legacy Family Tree to use it because I can't afford to buy extra space. But I think once I get my organizing done I will be putting my favorites in there so that if I'm at another location I will be able to log in to my account and use my favorites. I haven't figured out if I can automatically have my blog posts go directly to Dropbox or not.

I am still learning all the features of my Legacy Family Tree Program. I just had been entering what I found and if I remembered would put a source citation in (not in the proper way). So I have some fixing to do there. I just love when Geoff has a flash webinar. So far he has had one on Death Certificate and Marriage Record. It is fun to watch him doing it. I would be way to nervous and really goof up. And listening to suggestions and questions is really helpful. Sometimes he drops little hints about what is coming up in Legacy. I was so glad when I finally had saved up enough money to get the Deluxe Edition. It's only $29.95 but when you are on a limited budget it can take along time to save up. But even with just the Standard Edition you can do a lot.

I was finally able to see DearMyrtle's webinar on TweetDeck and learned how to use it. I also set up the Internet Genealogy Toolbar. (Forgot the address but Randy Seaver I believe had it suggested on his blog). I don't know if I set it up completely right or not but I can use it pretty good. But my yahoo!mail can't be used thru it because I have rocketmail.com instead of ymail.com.

I've had to switch to Mozilla Firefox as my browser because after Adobe Flashplayer updated my Internet Explorer 9 I was not able to view images on Footnote.com or familysearch.org. I installed and uninstalled it 3 or 4 times. Then I looked at the help on Footnote and finally installed Firefox and reinstalled Adobe Flashplayer and was able to view images with no problems.

I want to put a facebook badge on my blog but don't know which one to use. I have a twitter one on my blog but it only puts my tweets on here. Haven't figured out how to get all the tweets rolling that I get. I'm not sure what gadget to use for that. What can I say I'm a slow learner.

My niece Tonya McQueen is in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan (June 2-4) for Special Olympics. I don't know what region she is in but she is from Columbiaville, Lapeer, Michigan, USA. She has been practicing swimming and I know that is one event she will be participating in. Wish I could watch her. Mt. Pleasant is about 90 minutes or 2 hrs. from me. Sometime our local news has a small segment on but have never seen her cute face on there yet.

Well I better sign off for now and get something done today!!!!

What I have been up to the last few weeks!!!

I have been very busy organizing and sourcing all my images to family names in my Legacy Family Tree. This past week I have spent a lot time at Footnote.com looking at Holocaust records. I don't know if any of them are related or not.

I have a dumb question? Can anyone tell me what the enclosure link is used for? I am still confused on some features of Blogger and haven't been able to find any information on how and when to use it. I still have trouble with word processors and all there features. I'm an old fashioned gal with minute technology skills.

I am way behind in my blog reading of the blogs I follow. I catch some on facebook through the Networked blogs. But right now I figure it is better to get my Legacy Family Tree Program all fixed up and get the sources and images all linked up properly.

I had been trying for days to look at some images in FamilySearch.org and my little spinner just kept spinning and wasn't bringing up the images to look at. I tried looking at some I had looked at previously and same thing. No image would come up. It wasn't until I was looking at Footnote.com images and only getting a black screen with the image flickering all over the place that I decided to look at help. Because I had this flickering of the ads or something on the left side of my screen where my inbox, contacts, etc. is in my Yahoo!Mail going on which was really distracting and couldn't figure out why that was happening. Well after reading the help for black screen on Footnote.com it said something about uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Flashplayer and if that didn't correct the problem to try installing Firefox browser. Plus I contacted Support at Footnote.com and got same answer when I described my problem. So after uninstalling and reinstalling the Adobe Flashplayer version for Windows 7 3 or 4 times, I finally downloaded Firefox browser. and reinstalling Adobe Flashplayer I was able to view the images with no problem on both Footnote.com and FamilySearch.org. I was such a happy camper after several lost hours.

Now I have to get used to using Foxfire. Haven't had time to read all the helps yet so I don't understand all the features. But have discovered if I use my pinned sites on my taskbar it uses Internet Explorer 9 and wants to know if I want to make it my default browser. Well not until Adobe Flashplayer is able to work properly with it.

I downloaded something for I Tunes don't remember if it was a song or a Podcast or something from BlogTalkRadio but it was ITunes for Apple. The other night I missed my BlogTalkRadio broadcast I wanted to listen to with DearMyrtle so I hit the ITunes on my BlogTalkRadio gadget and did I ever have a hard time finding it. Got error messages from the ITunes Application in podcast. Finally did get it. Then I finally found it Music Library for Media Player also. I don't know if I uninstall the Apple ITunes if I am still going to be able to use the Itune on BlogTalkRadio. Sometime I really hate technology. I think a lot of times there is such a lack of instructions and information that come with apps. It is like they assume everyone knows all about this new technology and how to use it, they forget about us old folks that are still learning about computers and how to use them.

My Blogger is misbehaving. Every time I hit enter to make a new paragraph it takes me up 3 or 4 paragraphs.  Sometimes I think improvements makes something else not work properly. I like things to simply work properly.

I had erased My Passport Hard drive and had it so it had plenty of room to do backups then windows needed to backup and there went all that space. So now I guess I'm going to have to erase it again. I wish I knew how other people use their passport drives. I'm afraid that if I just use it like my flash sticks and copy my pictures, music, documents, videos and Legacy program files to it that I may forget to add the new ones to it.

Sometimes when I read something or someone explains something I think I understand but then when I go to do it, it doesn't work right. So I just seem to stumble along. I know Thomas has showed using dropbox and so has Pat through DearMyrtle, but I have way to much to use it solely. I am on a very limited budget so can't afford to buy extra space. I know I need to back up My system but am unsure about how best to do it. For instance if I want to backup my pictures that I have on C: drive and have on My Passport hard drive do I just chose copy pictures to the say H: my Passport and have to hit replace the ones that are the same on the H: my Passport. And then I would automatically have the new ones that I may have forgotten to add to the H: my Passport drive show up there. I know I can have my Legacy Family Tree program backup my data by choosing the H: my Passport (although right now my file is to big for it to backup keep getting that error message). Or is there another way? I need step by step how to do things.

Is there a way I can automatically have my blog backup to My DropBox as I write my blog and publish it? It seems like there should be a way to do it without having to download to my computer dropbox.

Well with the weather systems that has been going on we keep losing our signal for TV.  Lost our signal for CBS 9&10 last night completely for several hours then it kept blipping in and out during the news. Especially the weather. I think that is part of our problem with our internet connection too. We just have an antenna on the top of the house with a converter box. No Satellite or cable. We have Alltell as our internet provider and then have a cradlepoint router so both my husband and I can share the connection. Before if he wanted to get on the internet I would have to unplug the little usb device from my computer so he could plug it into his. But now every once in a while some days more than others we lose cradlepoint. Someday maybe we will have everything working smoothly.

I know a kid could probably pick up all this technology stuff and have it all work properly with no problems whereas I need to have everything explained step by baby step as to what to do and where I should be at when I need to do something. Sorry for being so stupid but some of this stuff I just can't seem to grasp entirely. I think I have it until I go to do. Maybe because I'm a simple person is the reason I have trouble with the assuming things.

Oh well, enough of my ramblings. I need to get something done. Even if it's wrong.

Until next time.

Trying to get ORGANIZED Oh My!!! Dropbox Oh Dear!!!

I spend most of yesterday trying to get myself, getting more of my pictures linked back up to my Legacy family members, My hard drive, and trying to figure out how to put things in Dropbox.

I clicked on the Dropbox icon on my computer all I seen was Photos and Public and a PDF for using dropbox. So I clicked on the PDF first read it. Apparently I need alot more pictures with good step by step instructions.
Adding files to your Dropbox
You've found your Dropbox folder, and you're ready to start using it. Let's move a file to your Dropbox folder.
Step 1: Drag and drop a file into your Dropbox.
Step 2: The blue icon means your file is syncing with Dropbox.

That's it! The green icon means that your file has finished syncing and is now available from your other computers and the website. Now that Dropbox is watching your file, any changes you make will sync instantly.

What do I do now?
There are three ways to interact with the Dropbox installation on your computer:
The Dropbox Folder

When you install the Dropbox application, Dropbox creates a Dropbox folder on your hard drive. In fact, it you're reading this guide, then you probably already found your Dropbox folder!

(Okay I must be in the right place, because that's where I'm reading the guide.

Now guide says Your Dropbox folder is just like any other folder on your hard drive. When you move a file to your Dropbox folder, you are also moving your file to your Dropbox folders on the web and your other computers. You don't need to do any manual copying or uploading; Dropbox takes care of all of that for you!

The green circle and check mean Dropbox is fully synced
The blue circle and arrows mean Dropbox is currently syncing and files are uploading/downloading.
The red circle with an "x" means Dropbox is unable to sync. Usually, this is because your storage quota is full (can't upload), your hard drive is full (can't download), or you are experiencing connection problems (no internet).

That all seemed pretty clear. But I read on I like to finish reading instructions all the way thru,

The Dropbox Contextual Menu

When you Right-Click (I have Windows) a file or folder in your Dropbox, you'll see a menu. This is called a contextual menu. The Dropbox desktop application installs a sub-menu there that allows you fast access to some of Dropbox's best features.
Share a folder
View Previous Versions
Browse File on Dropbox Websit
Copy Public Link

The Dropbox System Tray/Menu bar icon

The Dropbox system tray or menu bar icon is where you can check the current syncing status and change your Dropbox settings.

The same green, blue, and red icons that appear over the files and folders in your Dropbox also appear over the system tray icon to alert you to Dropbox's overall syncing status.

You can get more detailed information when you right-click on the Dropbox icon from the system tray or menu bar lining the bottom of the screen. The resulting pull-down menu allows you to do such things as:

Access your Dropbox folder, the Dropbox website, or the Dropbox help center.
See which files were recently changed.
View an estimate of how long it will take your Dropbox folder to fully sync
Change your Dropbox preferences including your Dropbox folder location, Dropbox account, and network settings.

Then it goes into Frequently Asked Questions which I read over.

I right clicked on Dropbox and this is what I got
Include in Library    >  Documents

Anyways when I drap and drop a file into Dropbox it took it away from my picture library. I had no intentions of putting my whole Legacy program in dropbox but coughed and it started going there in a matter of seconds. Bad News. My Legacy program on my computer was unusable. I was devastated. I finally hit the Install Legacy 7 but remember I'm still in my dropbox. Well that installed back on my computer but all my families, information, pictures showed 0. Oh Crap!!! now what do I do. So I went back to dropbox and copied the my families data files back in. Ok now my families are showing up no pictures. Ok back to dropbox and copied Photos, documents, videos Geo database back to Legacy on my computer. It seems to be working OK just seems like it takes longer to load up.

Let me tell you I was on the verge of breaking down and crying. I had worked on my genealogy files for a long time off and on and had throwed all my scraps of paper away that I had notes on. So I really hope I have it all fixed.

But now I'm leary about drop my pictures, documents etc into dropbox because I don't want them disappearing from where I'm used to looking for them.

I signed up for Thomas's Webinar in April for Dropbox. I rewatched the Webinar he had the other day on backing up. Still want to go back and reread DearMyrtle's on Dropbox. I need step by babystep with pictures to look at while I'm doing it. I'm so dense at times. Am I missing a step in doing this?

Then I have this little problem with my system backing up to my Passport. I keep getting messages not enough space. But I don't know how to fix it. Afraid to remove anything. I don't know how to make a restore disk or backup Disks on DVD.

Heck I still haven't figured out how to get the pictures off my phone to my computer.

The more new technology that comes out the loster I get. Easy as 1, 2, 3. Yeah Right. Not for this little old lady.
